The UC Berkeley Academic Senate passed a non-binding resolution last night calling for an end to subsidies to intercollegiate athletics at the university. The vote was 91-68 in favor of an immediate end to subsidies, but chancellor Robert Birgeneau said existing contracts meant that a quick end to subsidies would not be possible. We covered the issues at the core of the debate last week on Berkeleyside.
The 150-odd faculty that attended the meeting and voted on the resolution is about one-tenth of the university’s faculty.
KQED Forum devoted the first hour of its program this morning to the debate over the place of athletics in the university. Audio should be available soon through the archive.
