After a long holiday break, the Berkeley City Council will meet again tonight at 7 p.m. in the council chambers on Martin Luther King, Jr. Way. Interesting issues on the agenda include:
- A directive to seek safety improvements at number of Bicycle Boulevard crossings. There is some funding available for the work through Caltrans’ settlement with the Fourth Bore Coalition. I can vouch that the Russell crossings of Shattuck, Sacramento and San Pablo need attention. On the bicycle front, the agenda also includes a resolution to urge the Bay Area Toll Authority to fund a Bay Bridge west crossing bicycle/pedestrian path.
- A request to fund a report on the city’s long-term financial obligations. Although this looks like an innocent item, the resulting report should prove very sobering for long-term finances. Councillors Laurie Capitelli and Gordon Wozniak state: “The Council has not addressed short-term budgetary needs within the perspective of very long term obligations AND capital projections.”
- Foreign policy, as always, has a place. There’s a resolution to oppose Uganda’s anti-homosexuality bill.

Update There’s also a resolution to rescind the council’s previous decision to landmark Berkeley Iceland. With the on-again, off-again history of Iceland, this is also an agenda item to watch.
