More than 200 people swarmed onto Telegraph Avenue early this morning, turning a protest against fee hikes into a rampage against local merchants.

Students and other angry protesters gathered at Sproul Plaza around 11 pm to rally against the hikes, but soon departed for Telegrpah Avenue, where they lit dumpsters on fire, broke shop windows and danced in the streets in the melee. Others broke into Durant Hall and sprayed paint on the walls, according to news reports. Four separate police agencies were needed to control the protesters.Two people were arrested by the time the protest was brought under control at 4 am.
