Commuters traveling from the East Bay to San Francisco got a shock this morning when the BART train they were traveling on split in two.
A nine-car train bound from Pittsburg to the San Francisco International Airport was about to pull into the Embarcadero station around 6:23 am when one section become uncoupled from another. A fail-safe mechanism stopped the train cars immediately.
The driver was able to pull one five-car segment into the station so passengers could disembark, but the riders in the other four-car segment had to wait 15 minutes in the dark before a driver could be sent to steer the car.
The Westbound commute was delayed until about 8:30, when both car segments were off the tracks. BART is investigating the cause of the incident.
