When I went to pick up my daughters at Berkeley High on Tuesday afternoon, I was struck by the presence of a large number of Berkeley cops on bicycles.
At least four police officers were on Milvia Street right after school got out at 3:30 pm. Two were cycling around and two were stationed on Bancroft. There may have been more police officers on Martin Luther King.
They were there because of a recent rash of incidents at the school.
Apparently, something happened recently with some students of Yemini descent because Jim Slemp, the principal, held a conference with their parents on Tuesday.
Last week, some Berkeley High students stole a wig from a transvestite, who then came on campus and menaced students with scissors.
On Thursday a fight broke out between two groups of students.
On Wednesday, a Berkeley High Safety officer was assaulted in MLK Park by a BHS student and someone who did not attend the school.
What is going on here? Spring fever taken to a strange extreme?
(By the way, when Berkeley cops use their bicycles, they still have towear bullet proof vests and carry a lot of gear, making it a heavy load to pedal.)
