Mary Leggett’s famed Bed & Breakfast on Hillcrest Road is for sale. M’s B&B is something of a Berkeley institution: Leggett has been welcoming guests to her fantasy Tudor-castle style home for a decade. Leggett, 71, only decided to close it down and sell it last week. She says she has loved running the guesthouse but she wants to call it a day. “I can’t do it physically. But I’m not sad. I’m going to stay in the neighborhood and hope the house reverts to a family home.”
Over the years Mary has painstakingly refurbished the four-bedroom, four-bathroom home at 262 Hillcrest Road where she and her former husband, Alan, raised their three daughters. As well as operating as a B&B for overnight guests, the home has hosted weddings and meetings. The home has two patios, one with Bay views and one off the kitchen that is perfect for afternoon tea.
Mary Leggett is known around town. “She never sits still. She is always fussing and fixing, setting out breakfast and looking after her B&B guests when she is not exercising or sitting in the hot tub and chatting with long-time friends at the Claremont Hotel spa where she has been taking aerobics classic practically since they began giving them,” says Barbara Hendrickson, who is listing the property for Leggett through Red Oak Realty.
Its asking price is $1,349,000, it is being sold as a residential property not a business, and the first open house is on Sunday April 11.
