According to Brett Weinstein, there are more than 80 murals in our city. Some are well-known, such the one commemorating the history of the Free Speech Movement on the side of Amoeba Records, or the 3-D work at La Peña Cultural Center on Shattuck. Others are less visible, tucked down alleys or on roll-up garage doors.
Weinstein, a broker at Realty Advocates who has lived in Berkeley for over 30 years, has made a hobby of photographing the city’s murals and now he has devised a competition to see how many of them other Berkeley connoiseurs can recognize.
The contest, supported by the Civic Arts Commission, challenges our knowledge of Berkeley’s public spaces and asks us to identify the location of a number of murals within city limits. There are 143 pictures to peruse. The contest is open though the end of May: ten winners will receive $50 each for correctly locating the first 31 of the posted pictures; one Grand Prize winner will receive $300 for finding all 143.
In addition to the individual prizes, a $1,000 donation is being made towards the creation of Berkeley’s newest work at the Inkworks Printing Co. in West Berkeley.
