This weekend offers the opportunity to celebrate and support one of Berkeley’s best ideas. The Edible Schoolyard at King Middle School will be hosting its annual plant sale in the garden. Schoolyard founder Alice Waters will be on hand on Saturday morning to meet, greet and sign copies of her new book, “In the Green Kitchen”; and Bakesale Betty’s will be serving its iconic organic chicken sandwiches.
King students have spent the past months cultivating the garden, and plants for sale include over 20 varieties of tomatoes, as well as apples and other fruit, flowers, vegetables and herbs.
“The students started planting nine months ago, and have been tending the garden all year. The event is also perfect timing for Mother’s Day,” says David Prior, a spokesperson for the Chez Panisse Foundation. He says last year’s plant sale raised about $12,500 for the Schoolyard, and this weekend’s event is set to outpace that amount.
The event runs from 9 am to 3 pm Saturday, and 10 am to 1 pm Sunday at 1781 Rose Street. All proceeds from sales of “In the Green Kitchen” will benefit the Schoolyard. Saturday’s festivities also include a live band, and tours of the kitchen classroom and garden led by King students.
