Lisa Busbee-Young

Berkeley High School’s girls volleyball head coach Lisa Busbee-Young has been nominated for the People Magazine and Major League Baseball All-Stars Among Us Award. The award is given for volunteer work in the local community and Busbee-Young is among three finalists representing SF Giants.

The winner will be selected by public vote from now until June 20, 2010. The finalists will represent their respective baseball teams at the 2010 MLB All-Star Game in Anaheim July 11-14. One of the thirty finalists will be featured in People Magazine.

A single mom working full time, Busbee-Young volunteers her time to run StarlingsOakland, a volleyball program for underprivileged girls. At BHS, she coaches two volleyball teams and recruits and trains other coaches. In addition, Busbee-Young shuttles teams to tournaments, writes grants, recruits coaches and secures gyms. Her devotion to the girls even led her to become legal guardian for one.

“This is definitely an honor for Lisa,” said Mark Coplan, BUSD’s public information officer. “I hope that you will vote for her and ask your contacts to vote as well.”
