Local-global rock star Billie Joe Armstrong.

Green Day frontman and local rock-star Billie Joe Armstrong is to appear on Broadway in the musical hit American Idiot, the show based on the East Bay band’s album of the same name which made its debut at Berkeley Rep a year ago this month.

Armstrong, who also composed the musical, will take the part of St. Jimmy from Tuesday, September 28 through Sunday October 3 at the St. James Theatre in Manhattan.

After that, it will be back to touring for the Green Day’s lead vocalist-guitarist — he will join Green Day bassist Mike Dirnt and drummer Tré Cool  in Caracas, Venezuela to kick off the band’s South American tour on October 8. Green Day cuts its teeth at clubs such as 924 Gilman in Berkeley.

Tony Vincent, the original Broadway cast member who normally plays St. Jimmy will resume performances on October 12 following a leave of absence due to a personal family matter.

Armstrong, a local dad as well as a rock God, whose kids can often be encountered on East Bay soccer fields, late year sold his home in the upper Rockridge neighborhood and moved to an undisclosed location gritty punk rock city Piedmont.

His wife, Adrienne Armstrong, is the co-owner of Adeline Records (named after Adeline Street) and Atomic Garden, an eco-boutique at 5453 College Avenue.
