Community members participate in vigil for Fito

The murder of Ignacio Celed

ó

n, known to his friends as Fito, has spurred memorials, vigils and a community meeting to address safety in the neighborhood.

Last night, a few dozen community members and friends of Fito gathered for a silent vigil around the spontaneous memorial set up following the slaying.

On Wednesday at 6:30 p.m., a community meeting will be held at the Black Repertory Theater, 3201 Adeline St. Mayor Tom Bates, community representatives, and the Berkeley Police Department will be at the meeting.

“We want to start a dialogue on what can we do to prevent horrible things like this happening again,” said Clare O’Reilly, one of the many collaborators on the site, Viva Fito, and a friend of the murdered 35-year-old. “A lot of us are feeling powerless.”

Details of the community meeting and other activities in response to the killing can be found at Viva Fito.
