The boy, who is a freshman in the Academic Choice program at Berkeley High School, underwent surgery Saturday night to remove bullets a bullet from his head, according to sources at the high school.
The 14-year-old was shot around 3:26 p.m. Oct. 30 in the Alcatraz Avenue apartment of his best friend, a 17-year-old at Berkeley High, according to the grandmother of the 17-year-old. She believes that the shooting was an accident and does not know how or where her grandson got the gun.
Police talked to the 17-year-old after the shooting, according to the grandmother. Berkeley police have not announced any arrests in the shooting.
Berkeley High Principal Pasquale Scuderi went on the school’s loadspeakers on Monday to tell students about the shooting. The school called in extra counselors to assist friends of the victim.
Last week, the district had to send counselors to a number of schools, including the high school, to help students deal with the Oct. 26 murder of Gary Ferguson Jr. Ferguson was a long time resident of Berkeley and has children and relatives in many Berkeley schools.
In addition, a school bus taking students to Cragmont Elementary School drove by the murder just as it was happening. It is unclear how many of the students actually saw the shooting, but Berkeley police announced that they would interview at least one of the kids.
Police have arrested two men in connection with the murder: Brandon Wallace of Bay Point and Coleon Lee Carroll, who grew up in Berkeley.
