BUSD Board February 23, 2011 Recognition from Berkeley Public Schools on Vimeo.

Last week Jefferson Elementary School first grade teacher Beth Trevor was doubly honored. Firstly by the 826 Valencia Foundation which made her the recipient of its Teacher of the Month award. And secondly on the occasion of the Berkeley Unified School District board meeting when four of her pupils took the mic to tell board members just why they thought their teacher deserved such an award.

826 Valencia was founded in 2002 by San Francisco author Dave Eggers and educator Nínive Calegari to support students with their writing skills, and to help teachers get their students excited about the writing.

In the video above BUSD Superintendent Bill Huyett introduces the board to Trevor and reminisces about the two times he was forced to lay her off due to budget cuts. The two are clearly still friends, however. The video is nearly eight minutes long. If nothing else, watch the few moments when the four first graders have their turn in the limelight. It begins about 30 seconds in.
