Saul’s Deli co-owner Peter Levitt is more than a bit of a cricket fan. And he doesn’t really mind if his customers are not.
Levitt has taken an executive decision to show the Cricket World Cup games on the deli’s big screen all the way through to the finals. A huge sign advertises the fact in the window — blocking much of the natural light, according to one staffer there.
A miniscule number of Saul’s customers is enthusiastic — most of them Peter’s South African and English friends — but many are just perplexed. A couple of South Asian women rushed in when they saw the sign and told Levitt they would fill the house if he promised to show the final — which is taking place in Mumbai on April 2, and will broadcast here at 1am.
Saul’s co-owner Karen Adelman’s verdict on the shenanigans? “It’s beyond the pale.”
