Keeping us guessing: Alice Waters at the Berkeley Edible Schoolyard.

Sitting in front of a laptop nursing a herbal tea at the Chez Panisse Café, or perhaps pulling up a chair at the kitchen table or even a straightforward desk, is not the way Alice Waters intends to use her brand new Twitter account.

Instead, Waters is traveling across the Bay to the Twitter offices in San Francisco this afternoon in order to post a tweet.

This won’t be her inaugural tweet because that was sent out at around 10:30am today informing us of the fact her second tweet would be “coming soon”.

The “big announcement” which was being heralded last week by Waters’ staff — and which the foodie world (the food mediaMichael Pollan and Ruth Reichl included) is seemingly waiting for with bated breath — focuses on the arrangements for Chez Panisse’s 40th birthday celebrations and the concurrent campaign to support the Edible Schoolyards that are popping up all over the nation.

Originally a grand birthday party was to be held at the Greek Theater in Berkeley to mark the anniversary, but these plans may have changed, according to sources close to Waters, who tell us to expect another revelatory tweet at 5 p.m.

We know you’re all on tenterhooks, folks.

Update 03.29.11: After all the hoopla about Alice Waters using Twitter for an “important and  “surprising ” announcement, there was, eventually, a single tweet yesterday from the grande dame of gastronomy, which read: “We’ve just officially launched our #eatingforeducation campaign at Twitter HQ to bring a delicious revolution into public schools in America”. More details were shared at the press conference Waters held at Twitter’s San Francisco offices (an event the Chronicle’s Paolo Lucchesi helpfully live-blogged for the rest of us), but in the end it was really a case of “much ado about nothing”.
