The following crime log was prepared by the Berkeley Police Department and represents a sampling of crime in the city this week.

Residential Burglary – 2100 Block of California Street
On Tuesday, June 28 at about 7:45 p.m., a Berkeley woman called to report a burglary of her apartment. She told the BPD officer that she left at approximately 9:00a.m. that day and when she returned at about 7:30 p.m., she discovered that her bedroom window was open and an unidentified suspect or suspects had stolen some of her belongings. The suspect took a black 46” Sharp Aqua LCD flat screen TV, Nintendo Wii, Apple Power Mac laptop silver 15” and a white tote bag.

Residential Burglary – 1900 Block of Fairview Street
On Monday, June 27, 2011, a home in the 1900 block of Fairview was burglarized. A berkeley woman called at 4:57 p.m, after being gone for the day to report that someone entered her home and made off with a white Apple MacBook Pro and an HP 3 in one printer. The responding BPD officer who investigated and documented the crime learned that the woman had left the back door unlocked.

Residential Burglary – 1100 Block of Francisco Street
On Sunday, June 26, 2011 between 5:00 p.m. and 8:00 pm, a suspect or suspects burglarized a single family home in the 1100 block of Francisco Street. The Berkeley homeowners, a couple told BPD officers that they left their home at about 5:00 pm and returned at about 8:00 p.m., to find their front door ajar. They looked inside and found that the rear double doors had been forced open. The couple found that assorted jewelry, two iPOds, an Apple Macbook laptop and a Asus laptop had been stolen. A BPD Crime Scene Investigator processed the scene for evidence.

Strong Armed Robbery – 2000 Block of Center Street
On June 23, 2011 at 1753 hours, a 23 year old Napa man was the victim of a strong armed robbery. He had arranged to purchase prescription medications, without a prescription, Oxycontin, from a 44 year old Oakland man. They arranged to meet in downtown Berkeley. They met during which the buyer/victim gave the seller/suspect $350 dollars in cash. The suspect took the cash and starting running away. The 23 year old chased him through downtown Berkeley ending up fighting in Chase Bank where the buyer smashed through the bank’s glass door resulting in lacerations to the victims’ hands. Valencia continued this chase and subsequently detained the suspect in front of (IFO) 2050 Center St. The suspect used force to maintain possession of the victim’s stolen money, and to escape capture, despite the victim’s demands and requests to return the stolen cash. Several witnesses called 911 and the suspect was taken into custody by BPD officers. During a search incident to the suspect’s arrest, officers recovered and returned the stolen cash to the Napa man. The Oakland man was arrested and booked into the BPD Jail for 211PC – Robbery and a Probation Violation, as he was . The victim was treated at a local hospital ER for his injuries.

Attempted Robbery Via Sharp Object/Possible Knife – Ashby Avenue and Adeline Street
On Monday, June 27, 2011 at approximately 9:00 p.m., a 36 year old Berkeley man told the BPD officers who met him outside a local hospital that he was walking east on Ashby Avenue approaching Adeline Street. The victim heard someone approaching him from behind. He then felt a “sharp object poke his back” and the suspect then demanded his wallet. The victim started running north on Adeline Street but the suspect ran after him and stabbed him on the back of his head. A community member came to the victim’s aid and drove him to the nearest ER for treatment for his wound which was deemed minor and not life threatening.  The suspect was last seen running south on Adeline Street. The victim described the suspect as – “Unknown Race Male, 6’3”, Black Hoodie, Black Jeans”

Strong Armed Robbery – 2400 block of Haste Street
On Monday, June 27, 2011 at about 1:57 p.m., a 22 year old woman was walking in the 2400 block of Haste Street. She told responding officers that was checking a message on her cell phone, when suddenly a male suspect in his 20s grabbed her Verizon iPhone 4. She attempted to hold onto the phone but the suspect forcefully grabbed it finally which caused minor injury to the victim’s finger. Based on the description of the car and suspect that was provided, a BPD officer spotted a car that matched the description at 7th Street and Ashby Avenue. He made a car stop for investigation. The victim positively identified both the car and the suspect as being involved in the robbery. Her phone was recovered inside the car and also positively identified by the victim. A 22 year old male suspect was arrested and booked for robbery. Please Note – This case is still under investigation. So as not to compromise the ongoing work, we are not identifying the suspects name, description or the description of the car he was driving.

Strong Arm Robbery – Telegraph Avenue and Dwight
On June 26, 2011 at approximately 11:50 p.m., a 23 year old man was robbed walking on Telegraph Avenue near Dwight Way. He walked home and called BPD at about 12:14 a.m. on June 27th. He told responding officers that two suspects approached him and demanded his wallet. The victim pulled out his wallet and one of the suspects grabbed it. The victim then ran away from the suspects. The suspects made off with the victim’s brown leather Guess brand wallet containing cash. Officers did area checks but did not locate the suspects.

Strong Arm Robbery – 2000 block of Bancroft Way
On Sunday, June 26, 2011 at about 2:15 a.m., a 23 year old Berkeley man, unknown if affiliated was the victim of a strong armed robbery. He told patrol officers that he was on his bike when two male suspects walked up behind him and pushed him off his bike. One of the suspects pushed him into a metal tree guard which caused a cut to his lower lip. During the pushing, the suspects took and iPhone and cash from his pockets. The victim declined medical assessment at the scene. Officers did area checks but did not locate the suspects.

Recent Burglaries

Burglary of Church – 2200 Block of Cedar Street
On Monday, June 27, 2011 at about 10:42 a.m, an employee of an Episcopal Church in the 2200 block of Cedar Street called BPD to report that a suspects or suspects smashed a window sometime during the night to enter the building and stole nine musical instruments.

Commercial Burglary – 1800 Block of University Avenue.
On June 26, 2011 at 7:50 a.m., an employee of a fast food establishment called to report a burglary to the business. During the night, a suspect cheated the lock to the front doors and stole a large quantity of bacon, eggs and sausage.

Residential Burglary – 1200 block of 1200 block of Francisco Street
On Thursday, June 30, 2011, a woman was cleaning her home between 10:00-10:30 a.m., when she noticed her front door was ajar. She looked about and noticed that her purse and contents were missing and no doubt stolen by a suspect who entered her home through the unlocked door while she was distracted.
