Update, 11.24.11: The Berkeley Fire Department reports that all 68 residents of 2441 Haste Street have been accounted for. There were no firefighter or civilian injuries or fatalities as a result of the building’s five-alarm fire on November 18th.
Update 5:05pm According to KQED News, the city has said the fire-damaged building will need to be partially demolished.
The 1916 building on the corner of Haste and Telegraph, home to the Sequoia Apartments as well as long-established Berkeley businesses Café Intermezzo and Raleigh’s Bar & Grill, is now a mere shell following the huge fire which engulfed in on the night of Friday November 18th and Saturday 19th.
The fire was described by Deputy Fire Chief Gil Dong as the largest he had seen since the Oakland-Berkeley Firestorm of 1991.
The photo above, by Arturo Snuze, shows the extent of the damage. The building is currently being evaluated and demolition is a strong possibility.
