What exactly are Berkeley’s rules of the road for cyclists was a somewhat light, somewhat serious take on the etiquette of bike and car interactions. The second Berkeleyside podcast by producer John Rieger and photographer Nancy Rubin went to biking central — the stretch of Domingo Avenue near Peet’s, Rick and Ann’s, and The Bread Garden — to pose some tough questions.

Berkeleyside’s story on the beautification of the Le Roy Steps, and the neighborhood controversy it stirred up, was in itself controversial. The story of the neighborhood fight to save the slide at Strawberry Creek Park was a bit more uplifting.

The fire at the Sequoia Apartments remained a big Berkeley story for a second week in a row. Tenants of the apartment met to air their complaints against the landlord, who, they complained, did not keep up the building. The Berkeley Fire Department determined the fire started in the elevator shaft, but that it was not deliberately set. Demolition of the top two floors of the building started, and then stopped briefly on Wednesday, and then started up again.

This week Berkeleyside made a special limited offer: a beautiful 24 x 16 picture of Berkeley by Daniel Parks in exchange for a $300 donation or $25 a month subscription. Thank you to all our readers who decided to help support local journalism by signing up. There are still a few more prints available, but they are going fast. Berkeleyside welcomes all support and will list everyone who helped out in 2011 in an end-of-year thank you. Please consider subscribing or donating.
