If you’re in the market to buy art, there’s a strong argument for buying local given the wealth of talent in the Bay Area, including right here in Berkeley.
“Kala-fornia: State of the Art 2“, a two-week exhibition of works by prominent California artists, opens April 12 at the Kala galleries on Heinz and San Pablo with a preview party on opening night, and it culminates in a Gala Auction on the evening of Saturday, April 28. But the online auction preview is open right now if you are itching to peruse the art on offer.
Philanthropists Barclay and Sharon Simpson will co-chair the Gala Auction, for which tickets are available through Kala, and Deborah Oropallo and Rupert Garcia will be the honored artists. Channel 5 newscaster and artist Dana King, will be the mistress of ceremonies.
Oropallo has lived and worked in Berkeley for many years. Her current work borrows from internet images of women in commercially available superhero costumes, and then transforms them into intricate and animated large-scale figural prints.
Christopher Brown is also a Berkeley artist. Brown draws from historical photographs as well as personal recollection to create paintings of dream-like and often irrational juxtapositions.
