The news we broke on Wednesday that developer Eddie Orton was exploring the idea of buying Berkeley’s historic downtown post office drew the most eyeballs this week. While some have been holding demonstrations to rally to save the structure from going into private hands (above), and some love the building, but not the experience of going into it, at least one commenter is optimistic: “The announced closure of the Berkeley’s historic main post office has been reacted to with concern and near panic by some when in reality it’s an amazing opportunity,” wrote Steve Donaldson.
Architecture was also top of mind for the many readers who enjoyed reading about the three Berkeley homes that are included on this year’s August 11 AIA East Bay Home Tour.
Meanwhile two subjects that always interest many Berkeleyans, cycling and food, proved popular again. On Tuesday we published a California Watch story that looked at the high number of bike accidents around the campus; and we brought you two very different culinary tales with roots in the Gourmet Ghetto — a trip to Cuba by a Chez Panisse contingent and Vegi Food’s need to find new digs after 30 years in the same spot.
