The announcement today that Edmond Heatley, the only candidate for the top job in the Berkeley schools district, was no longer in the running prompted local parent Ty Alper to reflect on the lessons that can be learned from the BUSD board’s recruitment process. We are a “smart, thoughtful, resourceful community,” he says in an Opinionator piece published this morning, and we should be able to find the right candidate, given time and the right approach.

Berkeleyside welcomes submissions of op-ed articles of 500 to 800 words. We ask that we are given first refusal to publish. Topics should be Berkeley-related and local authors are preferred. Please email submissions to us. Berkeleyside will publish op-ed pieces at its discretion.
