DAY OF THE DEAD The 1400 block of Shattuck in North Berkeley will be the center of this year’s Dia de los Muertos celebration Friday night. Join dozens of people walking in a candlelight procession as they honor those who have passed on. There will be a community altar from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. and the procession runs from 7:45 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. There will be free face painting, mariachis, Aztec dancers, fire dancers, food trucks and a beer and wine garden. Comal, the Mexican restaurant on Shattuck Ave., will also be holding a Dia de los Muertos themed evening.
DODGEBALL FOR A CAUSE What better way to raise funds to fight prostate cancer than playing dodgeball? The World Dodgeball Society is hosting the Movember Mustache-aganza on Sunday Nov. 4, that includes a tournament and then pints at Pyramid Brewery. The Pints-for-Prostate tournament starts at the MLK Youth Services Gym, 1730 Oregon St. at 10:30 a.m., and then ends up at the Alehouse at 901 Gilman. To register a team of 10 (three must be women) visit their registration page. Participants must be 21 to play.
FIDDLING ON Theodore Bikel, the acclaimed actor who has played the character Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof more times than any other actor, will perform Saturday night as part of the Jewish Music Festival. Bikel, an Academy Award-nominated actor and internationally renowned folksinger, co-founded the Newport Music Festival in 1961, played Captain Von Trapp in the original Broadway production of A Sound of Music, and had roles in 30 films, including The African Queen, The Blue Angel, and My Fair Lady. Bikel will perform Nov. 3 at 7:30 p.m. at The Magnes, 2121 Allston Way.
LEARNING LOVE The Sessions, the new acclaimed film starring Helen Hunt and John Hawkes tells the story of two Berkeley residents, Cheryl Cohen Greene, a certified sex surrogate, and her disabled client, the late poet and journalist Mark O’Brien. Greene, now a grandmother, will be talking about her work and her forthcoming memoir, An Intimate Life: Sex, Love, and My Journey as a Surrogate Partner, on Sunday Nov. 4 at 4:00 p.m. at The Works Cooperative Exercise Studio at 2566 Telegraph Ave. Greene, who is a member of The Works, will be in conversation with Earll Kingston, an actor and the husband of Maxine Hong Kingston. Tickets are $20.
FAMILY CLASSICS Somebody has snuck into the orchestra and rearranged all the instruments! Conductor Ming Luke and the musicians of the Berkeley Symphony will need all the help they can get to put the instruments back in their proper places. The Berkeley Symphony Family concert allows kids to learn how instruments are organized in an orchestra and discover their unique characteristics. It takes place on Nov. 3 10:00 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. at Malcolm X Elementary School. Tickets: $5 Child; $10 Adult. Visit the Berkeley Symphony for details.
