This is a partial list of recent crimes in Berkeley based on information from the Berkeley Police Department and the UC Berkeley Police Department.

The calls for service spreadsheet is available on Google Docs. (Please note that the numbers reflected in the report are only a snapshot of what occurs in the City of Berkeley. The numbers are considered for informational purposes only and should not be used for data analysis or comparison to other agencies. Cases may be reclassified after further review of the incident, by supervisors, investigating detectives or the District Attorney as appropriate.)

Strong Arm Robbery, Channing Way and Dana Street
On Tuesday, November 13, 2012, at approximately 5:57 a.m. a strong arm robbery occurred near the south side of Unit 3.  The 19 year old male victim was at the intersection of Channing and Dana when two male suspects ran up to him from behind.  The suspects demanded the victim’s property.  The victim, fearing for his safety, gave the suspects his wallet.  The suspects ordered the victim to turn and run. The victim complied and the suspects fled in an unknown direction.  UCPD and BPD searched the area but were unable to locate the two suspects.  The victim was not injured during the encounter. The suspects are described as: Suspect #1 –  A Black male in his late 20s, 6’1” in height, 185 lbs., wearing a black beanie, a dark heavy coat and grey pants. Suspect #2 – A Black male in his mid-20s, 5’11” in height, 160-170 lbs., with close cut black hair wearing a grey pattern sweatshirt and light blue jeans.

November 14:

Attempted robbery via pepper spray, 2200 block of Durant Avenue #12-63250
On Wednesday, November 14th, 2012, at 6:12 p.m. an attempted robbery occurred along the 2200 block of Durant Avenue. The 20 year old female victim, unknown affiliation to UCB, was walking on Durant Avenue when she was approached by two individuals, a female and male. The female suspect sprayed the victim with pepper spray and attempted to take the victim’s purse. The victim held on to her purse and both suspects fled the area, possibly in a white vehicle.  The victim was not injured during the encounter.  BPD searched the area but could not locate the suspects or the vehicle. The suspects are described as: Suspect #1 –  A Black female , 23 years of age, 5’04” in height, heavy build, black hair in a bun, wearing a yellow shirt and blue jeans. Suspect #2 – A Black male, 23 years of age, 6’4” in height, with a thin build.

November 15:

Armed robbery, LeRoy Avenue at Ridge Road, #12-63492
On Thursday, November 15th, 2012, around 11:00 p.m., an armed robbery occurred near the intersection of LeRoy Avenue and Ridge Road.  The male student victim was walking when the suspect approached him from the front. The suspect armed with a dark colored handgun demanded the victim’s backpack.  The victim complied and was not injured during the encounter. The suspect fled southbound on foot toward campus.  UCPD and BPD checked the area and was unable to locate the suspect. The suspect is described as: A Black male, approximately 40-50 years of age, 6’-00” in height, medium build, facial hair (possibly a beard), wearing dark clothing and armed with a dark colored handgun.

November 18:

Robbery, 2000 Block of Kittredge Street
On Sunday, November 18 at approximately 10:00 PM a robbery occurred in the 2000 block of Kittredge Street.  The female victim was walking in the area when the unknown suspect stole the victim’s phone from her pocket.  The victim attempted to get the phone back.  The suspect pushed the victim and pulled her hair.  The victim was able to recover her cell phone.  The suspect ran from the area. The suspect is described as: Suspect – “White Female Adult, 40-50 years old, 5’06”, thin build, mixed blond and brown shoulder length hair possibly wearing prescription glasses.”

Burglary Northgate Hall, #12-05883
On Sunday, November 18, 2012 at approximately 8:26 p.m. UCPD responded to a report of 10 computers missing from a computer lab at Northgate Hall,School of Journalism. The suspect is believed to have entered the building though the south main entrance. The suspect gained entry to the lab via a door kick which damaged the frame of the door.

November 19:

Residential Burglary, 1800 Block of Alcatraz Avenue
On Monday, November 19 between 7:30 AM and 5:20 PM a residential burglary occurred in the 1800 block of Alcatraz Avenue.  The victim reported an unknown suspect entered her home and stole her laptop computer.  It appears the suspect may have entered the home by forcing open a window.

November 20:

Loud Reports, Harmon Street/Baker Street
On Tuesday, November 20, 2012 at approximately 5:07 PM, a resident called reporting the sounds of possible gun shots.  The caller also reported hearing vehicles speed from the area.  BPD officers were dispatched to the location.  They were unable to locate any victims or property damage.  The vehicles were gone when the officers arrived.

November 21:

Auto Burglary, 800 Block of Colusa Avenue
On Wednesday, November 21, 2012 between 5:05 PM and 7:55 PM an auto burglary occurred in the 800 block of Colusa Avenue.  The victim reported parking and locked her vehicle.  An unknown suspect broke the window to the vehicle, stealing the victim’s purse.

November 22 :

Vandalism, 2900 Block of Regent Street
On Thursday, November 22, 2012 between 1:00 AM and 3:00 PM an unknown suspect vandalized a business in the 2900 block of Regent Street.  A security guard patrolling the area contacted BPD after discovering an unknown suspect used spray paint graffiti the building.

November 23 :

Stolen Vehicle, 5th Street and Harrison Street
On Friday, November 23, 2012 between 9:45 AM and 2:00 PM the victim’s vehicle was stolen while it was parked near the intersection of 5th Street and Harrison Street.  The victim parked and locked her vehicle in the morning.  When she went out in the afternoon she discovered an unknown suspect had taken her car.  Taken was a White, 1999, Honda Civic, two-door.  The vehicle was recovered on November 26, 2012 in Richmond, CA.

November 24 :

Commercial Burglary, 2800 Block of Telegraph Avenue
On Saturday, November 24, 2012 at 11:13 AM, an employee reported an unknown suspect broke into a business in the 2800 block of Telegraph Avenue.  The unknown suspect broke a window to the business.  The suspect stole cash from the business.  The incident occurred sometime during the night.

Robberies – Update Sproul Plaza and Golden Bear Cafe ATM
An arrest has been made in connection with these robberies.  Kody Alan Smith has been taken into custody and has been charged with multiple counts of robbery. On Monday, September 10th, 2012 two robberies occurred at the Golden Bear ATM.  The first victim was walking on lower Sproul Plaza at around 2:55 p.m. when she was approached by a male who identified himself as “Kody” and asked her if she would like to purchase a magazine subscription.  The victim agreed to buy the subscription, however, when informed of the price she declined.  The suspect and two accomplices threatened the victim.  The suspect walked the victim to a nearby ATM in the Golden Bear Café.  The victim withdrew cash which was taken by the suspect.  The suspect and his companions were last seen walking towards the Sather Gate.  The victim was not injured during the encounter.

The second robbery occurred at about 4:50 p.m.  The victim, a 21 year old female student, was walking through Sproul Plaza near the intersection of Bancroft Way and Telegraph Avenue when she was approached by a male.  The male introduced himself as “Kody” and told the victim that he was selling magazine subscriptions.  The male suspect attempted to verbally pressure the victim into buying several subscriptions. The victim declined but due to hand gestures made by the suspect, she feared that she would be physically harmed if she tried to walk away without giving the suspect
money.  The suspect walked the victim to an ATM in the Golden Bear Café where the victim withdrew cash which she gave to the suspect.  While standing in line the victim noticed the suspect talking to a male and female who seemed to be acquaintances.  The suspect was last seen leaving the café.

The following individual has been arrested: SMITH, Kody Alan, a White male, 24 years of age, 5’11” in height, 135 lbs., with a thin build, blue eyes and short hair.  There is no description of the suspect’s two companions at this time.

Community safety tip:  Do not leave packages or valuables on the seat of your vehicle.
