A Berkeley man found dead in the water near the Oakland Marina at Jack London Square appears to have died of natural causes, according to the Alameda County coroner’s office.
The body of Richard Rice, 59, was found Saturday at about 9 a.m.
Rice’s cause of death does not appear to be suspicious, a staffer at the coroner’s office said Monday.
The Oakland Police Department did not respond to additional requests for information Monday.
Officer Jennifer Coats of the Berkeley Police Department told the Oakland Tribune that Rice had been reported missing Sunday by employees at the care facility where he lived, and that he had last been seen Friday.
Coats said she was told it was not unusual for Rice to take walks from his home at Royal Colony, on Alcatraz Avenue, according to the Tribune.
Coats was not available by phone late Monday afternoon.
The Oakland Police ask anyone with information about Rice’s death to call 510-238-3821.
