ABSENCE MAKES THE JAZZ GROW FONDER – Since it still is winter break for colleges, jazz aficionados have an opportunity to hear four Berkeley High Jazz alumni who have returned temporarily from their studies around the country. The Homecoming Collective – Erik Shiboski, bass; Grant Milliken, vibraphone; Lev Facher, drums; and Nick Lamb, piano; – will play Friday Jan. 4 at the Jazz School at 8 p.m.
REMEMBRANCE OF THINGS PAST – With the announcement that a Los Angeles developer has purchased the Shattuck Avenue building that one housed Hinks – and wants to build three apartment towers nearby – the old department store is once again in the news. What is Hinks, you may ask? If you don’t know, be sure to check out the exhibition at the Berkeley Historical Society titled Vanished: Berkeley’s Lost Businesses and Institutions. Phil and Phyillis Gale curated this show, which has pictures of Hinks, as well as interesting ephemera like “the original Haws drinking fountains invented in Berkeley, the ‘hot fudge’ warmer from Ozzie’s Soda Fountain, and the cap worn by the Berkeley Junior Traffic Patrol. The society is at 1931 Center Street and is open 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays until March 30.
TALK THE WALK – Learn about early Berkeley lore and and the architecture of the north side of the UC Berkeley campus on a Saturday tour sponsored by the Berkeley Path Wanderers Association. Bob Gomez will lead a walk at 9 a.m. Saturday Jan. 5 that starts at Normandy Village and Holy Hill up to the old Hillside (now German) School. Well-behaved dogs on leashes are welcome. The walk will be cancelled if it rains.
CUBAN RELIEF – Hurricane Sandy ravaged the East Coast of the United States. But it also ravaged Cuba, as Mayor Tom Bates and Loni Hancock saw on their recent tour of Berkeley’s sister city, Palma Soriano. La Pena Cultural Center will host a fundraiser for the hard hit Carribean island on Saturday Jan. 5 at 7:30. Jazz and blues singer Barbara Dane and her son Pablo Menendez will join with Mimi Fox, John Santos and others.
Dollar Day – Everything costs a dollar Sunday at Golden Gate Fields. Admission to see the horse races. Parking. Beer. Soda. Hot Dogs. So if you have ever been curious about what goes on at that racecourse by the Bay, Sunday Jan. 6 – and 13th, 20th, and 27th – would be a good time to check it out. Dollar Day details.
