A 19-year-old Berkeley man is set to appear in court Wednesday after police say he and another young man surprised a woman at home during a recent burglary attempt.
Officer Jennifer Coats, spokeswoman for the Berkeley Police Department, said the arrest stemmed from an incident Dec. 31 at about 12:30 p.m.
A woman was home in the 1800 block of Stuart Street, just west of Martin Luther King Jr. Way, when she was surprised by two males who entered.
“She ran out of her home screaming, alerting her neighbors,” said Coats, via email. “The neighbors witnessed the suspects running from the home. Several of her neighbors called the police reporting the incident.”
Berkeley police responded to the area to look for the young men. Coats said they ran away from one officer who tried to stop them.
The young men were later detained after a neighborhood search.
Police arrested Terrance Stanley Jr., 19, of Berkeley on suspicion of burglary and resisting arrest. Coats said a second person, a juvenile male, also was arrested.
Stanley is being held with a bail of $50,000 in Santa Rita Jail in Dublin.
He is scheduled for a preliminary examination at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday Jan. 16 in Department 112 at the Wiley W. Manel Courthouse in downtown Oakland.
