When Wareham Development received planning permission for a new laboratory building at 740 Heinz Avenue in 2009, it agreed to preserve two of the old brick walls. But now the developer asserts that preserving the walls will prove too expensive, and has received ZAB approval for a completely new building on the site. The proposal comes before the Berkeley City Council at its meeting this Tuesday.
Berkeleyside covered an unusual amount of crime this week. The statistics don’t suggest a surge in crime, but other sources of news were surprisingly quiet. An Oakland man was arrested in connection with three Berkeley crimes committed in December; UCPD arrested one man and seeks another on suspicion of vandalism that it said was a hate crime; a bank robbery was committed on Solano Avenue on Wednesday; and a Berkeley 19-year-old was arrested after a burglary on New Year’s Eve. Four juveniles were also arrested outside Berkeley High on Wednesday following fighting near the intersection of Kittredge and Milvia.
Finally, there’s alway food news in Berkeley (and you can keep up with all the food news throughout the East Bay on our own Nosh), but several food stories stood out this week. The latest in a spate of pizza restaurants, Sliver, opened, with a philanthropic twist. The oldest restaurant on Shattuck, Giovanni’s, is fighting for survival. And three Berkeley-founded companies, Fra Mani, the Cultured Pickle Shop, and INNA Jam, are all finalists in the 2013 Good Food Awards.
We hear many different reasons why people read Berkeleyside: to keep up with the news, to marvel at the work of the extraordinary photographers who contribute to the site, to enter the fray of the comments.
