The following items represent just a sampling of calls, and were selected by the Berkeley Police Department, unless otherwise noted. See past crime narratives from the police, and Berkeleyside’s most recent compilation of calls for service.
On Wednesday, the University of California Police Department also issued an alert about three recent armed and strong-arm robberies that occurred near campus. According to Berkeley Police Department data, four robberies took place near campus in less than 24 hours. Scroll down past the next map for more information.
From Jan. 27 to Feb. 2, there were 20 burglary reports, 24 auto break-in or theft reports, and 10 stolen vehicle reports to the Berkeley Police Department, according to CrimeMapping.com. Seven robberies and 10 assaults, domestic violence incidents or batteries were reported.
Jan. 27, Sunday: At 7:30 p.m., a man reported that his vehicle had been stolen from the 2700 block of Dohr Street. He said he had parked his white 1994 Ford F250 pickup truck on the street. The Oakland Police Department later notified him that his truck had been found in Oakland. Authorities said they do not know who stole the vehicle.
Jan. 28, Monday: A thief broke into a vehicle in the 2400 block of Webster Street between 8 and 9:45 p.m. The victim had parked and locked his vehicle. A burglar broke a window and stole the victim’s laptop.
Jan. 29, Tuesday: Police responded to the 1800 block of Spruce Street after a report of possible gunshots just before 8 p.m. Officers responded to the area and were unable to locate any property damage or a victim.
Jan. 30, Wednesday: A thief forced open a rear window of a home in the 1400 block of Harmon Street between 4:30 and 8 p.m. The burglar took numerous items, including cameras and jewelry.
Jan. 31, Thursday: A police officer on patrol interrupted a robbery attempt in the 1500 block of Russell Street at about 3:30 p.m. Two men tried to rob a 27-year-old Berkeley resident. One of the men was armed with a gun. Police said the suspects tried to walk away when they spotted the Berkeley police officer. Both were arrested on suspicion of attempted robbery. Feb. 1, Friday: A vandal left graffiti on a building in the 2900 block of Seventh Street at about 2:46 p.m. An employee of the vandalized business reported the crime.
Feb. 2, Saturday: A woman said a thief stole her wallet from her purse under her desk inside a business in the 2200 block of Ashby Avenue at about 3:20 p.m.
The Berkeley Police Department includes this disclaimer: “Please note that these are Calls For Police Services (CFS) only and are subject to review and reclassification. Cases may be reclassified after further review of the incident, by supervisors, investigating detectives or the District Attorney as appropriate.”
Authorities announce robbery-related crime alert
On Wednesday, UCPD sent out an email alert describing three recent robberies near campus, one of which involved a knife and sent a man to the hospital. According to data from the Berkeley Police Department, four robberies were reported in the area in less than 24 hours.
On Sunday, Feb. 3, at about 8:30 p.m., a robber with a gun stole a cell phone from a 21-year-old man affiliated with the university. The incident happened near Dwight Way and Regent Street, by People’s Park, and the suspect left in a green sedan. The robber was described as a black man in his 20s, 5 feet 7 inches tall, with short hair and a medium build. He was wearing dark clothing.
Monday at about 2:30 a.m., three males with a knife robbed a 37-year-old man of his cell phone, money, credit card and jewelry. The incident happened near Shattuck and University avenues, and the victim was taken to the hospital afterward for injuries sustained during the robbery. The suspects fled in a white sedan, according to police; all three were described as black males, tall with thin builds, wearing dark clothing. One of them had shoulder-length hair.
Monday night, at about 6:20, three boys robbed a 20-year-old woman of her cell phone on Channing Way and Dana Street. All three fled on foot, according to university police. No suspect information was available.
Another robbery, at 6:11 p.m. Monday at Channing Way and Dana Street, was not included in the university’s robbery alert, but does appear on CrimeMapping.com, which pulls in data from the Berkeley Police Department.
