Berkeley High’s girls’ basketball powerhouse, the Lady Yellowjackets, played — and lost — their third consecutive state final on Friday night, falling to Long Beach Poly, 46-28. The game was Berkeley’s record-setting 12th state final appearance.

Senior standout Rachel Howard led the Yellowjackets with 11 points and five rebounds. Berkeley was held to 23% shooting from the floor and committed 26 turnovers. It was the fourth meeting between Berkeley and Long Beach Poly in a state final: the Jackrabbits triumphed in all the games, winning in 2006, 2007, 2008, as well as this year. Berkeley lost the 2011 and 2012 finals to Mater Dei from Santa Ana.

A recent Lady Yellowjacket star had a happier weekend on the basketball court. Sophomore Brittany Boyd — a 2011 BHS graduate — led number two-seed Cal to a 90-76 win over Fresno State, taking them to a NCAA round of 32 matchup against South Florida. Boyd had 21 points, 13 rebounds and nine assists.
