March 17, Sunday: A woman made a report to police at 8 a.m. that her bicycle had been stolen from the rear yard of her residence in the 2600 block of Ashby Avenue. Taken was a light blue Giant Cypress bicycle with wicker baskets and a brown seat.
March 18, Monday: A robbery occurred at 10:05 p.m. in the 1900 block of Russell Street. A woman was walking home when a stranger grabbed her from behind and took her bag, pulling her to the ground. The robber stole the bag, which held a cell phone, wallet and other items. The robber was described as a black man, 25 years old, 6 feet 2 inches tall with a skinny build, and wearing a black baseball hat, black tank top and black pants.
March 19, Tuesday: A store owner reported a commercial burglary in the 2100 block of Shattuck Avenue at 8:35 a.m. The owner had locked up the previous night. When he returned in the morning he discovered the front door had been pried open and the store had been prowled.
March 20, Wednesday: An auto burglary occurred in the 2400 block of Prospect Street between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. The victim parked on the street and later returned to find his window smashed and his laptop taken.
A BART Police officer arrested Jonathan Jefferson on March 20 on a warrant related to a robbery last fall. Berkeley Police spokeswoman Officer Jennifer Coats said — in response to a request from Berkeleyside — that, on Sept. 25, 2012, at 11:10 p.m., a robbery occurred in the 1400 block of Cedar Street. The victim was walking when he was approached by one of two strangers. Coats said the victim tried to run away but he fell. One of the men pointed what the victim believed to be a gun at him and demanded his cell phone and wallet. The robbers removed the property from the victim and fled in a dark-colored sedan. Berkeley Police detectives following up on the investigation developed information that Jefferson was one of the suspects, said Coats. An arrest warrant was issued for Jefferson. On March 20, a BART Police officer arrested Jefferson on the outstanding warrant. He was booked into the Berkeley City Jail on suspicion of second-degree robbery, being armed with a firearm during the course of a felony, possession of stolen property and vehicle theft. He is being held at Santa Rita Jail with a bail of $600,000 and is set to enter a plea after arraignment on April 8.
Berkeley police arrested Kasie Jackson, 42, after a probation search at her home in Oakland turned up materials that could be used to make fake IDs and access cards, said Coats, in response to a request from Berkeleyside. Police also discovered evidence of identity theft, said Coats. Jackson was arrested March 20 on suspicion of unlawfully possessing access cards, modifying access card account information, possessing card-making equipment, obtaining personal information, and having the information of 10 or more people, according to the Alameda County sheriff’s department. As of March 27, she no longer appeared to be in custody.
March 21, Thursday: A robbery occurred near the intersection of Parker Street and College Avenue at 9:55 p.m. A female was walking when she was approached by a man who was armed with a gun. He demanded her property and she gave him her laptop and wallet. The robber was described as a black man in his 20s, 5 feet 10 inches tall with a thin build and a dark complexion. He was clean shaven and wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt and dark jeans.
At approximately 7:30 p.m., officers responded to Berkeley Bowl West for a report of someone driving recklessly, said Coats (in response to a request from Berkeleyside, as tipped by a Berkeleyside reader). The call was quickly updated to a hit-and-run collision near Seventh Street and Ashby Avenue. According to the reader, who was on the sidewalk near Seventh, “a dark SUV came tearing down the street and crashed through some posts marking the dead end… When I came out of the store at 8, police were at multiple intersections of Ashby (at San Pablo, and down toward the freeway). There were at least two other vehicles that looked like they had been run into.” The driver fled the area and remained at-large as of Monday. One person received non-life threatening injuries during the incident, said Coats.
March 22, Friday: The Berkeley Police Department received a call about one loud report in the area of Durant Avenue and Fulton Street at 1:34 a.m. Officers responded to investigate and determined the sound to have been a firework.
March 23, Saturday: A woman reported at 11 a.m. that her vehicle had been stolen from the 1400 block of Oxford Street. She had parked her vehicle in the driveway the prior evening. When she went out in the morning, the lavender-colored four-door 1995 Nissan Maxima was gone.
