
Jalena Keane-Lee, a senior in Berkeley High’s International Baccalaureate program, left Berkeley on Thursday to visit two of the colleges to which she had been accepted: Barnard in New York and Wellesley in Massachusetts. She got caught up in the lockdown of Boston as police hunted for the suspect in the Boston Marathon bombings. Today is also Jalena’s 18th birthday and she reflects on her new adulthood, violence in America and elsewhere, and citizenship in this Opinionator piece.
