Update, 6:10 p.m. Lt. Alex Yao of the University of California Police Department said Grizzly Peak Boulevard has been re-opened to traffic. The victim has been identified as an adult male who was not affiliated with UC Berkeley. The Alameda County coroner’s office said information about the victim’s identity would need to come from police. Further details were not available Sunday night.
Original post, 2:53 p.m. Police are investigating the death of one person who was reportedly shot early Sunday morning on Grizzly Peak Boulevard between Centennial Drive and South Park Drive.
Earlier Sunday, the road was closed to through traffic as police continued their investigation and, as of about 2:40 p.m. it remained closed, police said.
Lt. Alex Yao of the University of California Police Department said authorities received multiple 911 calls at 5:38 a.m. Sunday regarding a casualty on Grizzly Peak. As officers responded, a caller told police that there might have been a shooting.
“When officers arrived on scene they discovered a vehicle off to the side of Grizzly Peak Boulevard with a victim outside the vehicle,” said Yao. “Officers performed medical aid to the victim but the victim was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Berkeley Fire Department.”
Yao said police found the car south of signpost 16 on Grizzly Peak, about midway between Centennial to the north and South Park to the south. He declined to say whether other people connected with the victim were on scene when police arrived.
Yao said the shooting victim was male, but that he could not release any additional information pending the Alameda County coroner’s office notification to the family about the death, out of sensitivity toward the victim’s family.
Yao said police are still in the early stages of their investigation.
Police ask anyone with information about the incident to call UCPD at 510-642-6760, and ask to be transferred to the Criminal Investigations Bureau.
