
CYPRESS TREE STUDIOS OPEN HOUSE Spend an afternoon at Cypress Tree Studios this Saturday from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. The studio’s open house will include artwork by Sarah Winkler, Bob Bechtol, Pat Sonnino, Patricia Bruning, Thomas Richardson, and more, as well as live music from GIO, Gary Garrett and KOCH starting at 4 p.m. Food will be provided by Elite Eats Hot Dogs. RISK EXHIBITION AT THE BERKELEY ART CENTER The Berkeley Art Center’s annual juried exhibition will open to the public this Saturday, June 29. Apsara DiQuinzio of the Berkeley Art Museum and Kimberly Johansson of the Johansson Project have selected 34 artists from a pool of nearly 250 applicants. Their work, all of which centers around the idea of risk – creating it, examining it, or even being made under circumstances of it – will be shown at the Berkeley Art Center. SUMMER SPRITE PEG DOLLS FOR KIDS Castle in the Air will be home to a peg doll making class for children “ages three to tween” this Sunday. Led by Margaret Bloom, the class will use felt, paint, and a little glue to turn wooden pegs into colorful pixies, sprites, action figures and more. (Both boys and girls are encouraged to come). Parents should sign their child up for a half hour session, arrive a few minutes early, and be willing to stay in the store while their child is in class. There will be a few walk in slots available. BERNARD MAYBECK LEGACY CELEBRATION WEEKEND In honor of the Bay Area premiere of Paul Bockhorst’s new documentary “Pursuing Beauty: The Architecture of Bernard Maybeck,” which screens Friday at Berkeley’s Town and Gown Club, the Berkeley Architectural Heritage Association is hosting a series of events this weekend to honor the legacy of esteemed architect Bernard Maybeck. The events include several walking tours of Berkeley, Oakland, and San Francisco buildings Maybeck designed, receptions, a screening of the documentary, and more. More details at BAHA online.

YOUNG ARTISTS UNVEIL ‘ART CART’ More fun on Fourth Street: This Saturday, from 1-3 p.m. in Fourth Street Plaza, at Fourth and Delaware, Berkeley Youth Spirit Artworks’ young artists will unveil their new green art sales venture vehicle—the “Art Cart,” a trike that youth will be able to ride to sell their art in retail areas around the Bay Area. Speakers at the unveiling will include: Councilman Max Anderson, Mayor Tom Bates and Councilwoman Linda Maio.
