
‘SUPER CINEMA’ AT THE BERKELEY PUBLIC LIBRARY The Berkeley Public Library’s free film series “Super Cinema” continues, starting July 5. Each month on Friday afternoons at 3 p.m., the library explores a different theme. This Friday’s theme is ‘Resisting Injustice’, in honor of the recent Supreme Court rulings on marriage equality. Kick back and watch “Stonewall Uprising”, a great movie that tells the whole story of the June 1969 riots in New York City that sparked the gay rights movement. MOVING TOGETHER FAMILY DANCE CLASS Taught by Rossana Alves every first Sunday of the month at Berkeley’s vibrant Bras Arte World Dance Center from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., this dance class creates a fun space in which parents and children can move and play together. LAGOS ROOTS AFRO-BEAT ENSEMBLE AT THE LA PEÑA Kick off your holiday weekend this Friday at 8 p.m. at La Peña Community Center with this amazing band containing original master musicians and members of a new generation of afrobeat musicians! Members of the Lagos Root Afro-Beat Ensemble include Fela Anikulapo Kuti and Afrika 70, Sonny Okosun, Koola Lobitos, and Segun Bucknor, among others. BAY AREA POETS COALITION OPEN READING Every first Saturday of the month from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Strawberry Creek Lodge, the BAPC comes together to enjoy a friendly and informal read-around of their poetry. FREE LECTURE SERIES: MEDITATE NOW! This Sunday from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., as part of the Nyingma Institute’s free lecture series in July, come listen to Tibetan yoga instructor Santosh Philip on “Relaxing into Meditation”. If you’re interested in meditation but unsure on how to start or sustain a daily practice, this is the perfect class for you. As part of the lecture, Philip will lead listeners through exercises and explain methods to maintain the alert relaxation of meditation within your daily activities.
