This is a partial list of recent crimes in Berkeley, compiled by Berkeleyside, and based on reports to the Berkeley Police Department unless otherwise noted. See past crime blotters here. The following items represent just a sampling of calls, and times may be approximate. From July 18-24, there were 17 burglary reports, 30 auto break-in or theft from a vehicle reports, and 11 stolen vehicle reports to the Berkeley Police Department, according to CrimeMapping.com. Six robberies and 11 assaults, domestic violence incidents or batteries were reported. These numbers are subject to change. Click the previous links for the most current information.
Thursday, July 18
Three home burglaries were reported: at 1 a.m. in the 1700 block of Shattuck Avenue; at 7 p.m. in the 2700 block of Stuart Street; and at 10:29 p.m. in the 2200 block of Dwight Way. According to a statement released by the Berkeley Police Department, authorities received a report of a possible burglary in progress in the 2200 block of Dwight. A caller reported seeing someone enter a neighbor’s window. Officers arrived and detained the intruder, who was subsequently arrested on suspicion of burglary.
There were seven auto burglaries reported: at 5 a.m. in the 2700 block of Acton Street; at 4:48 p.m. in the 3000 block of Telegraph Avenue; at 7 p.m. in the 900 block of Regal Road; at 7 p.m. at Addison and Milvia streets; at 7:50 p.m. at Lincoln Street and Shattuck; at 11 p.m. at Haste and Ellsworth streets; and at 11 p.m. in the 500 block of Alvarado Road.
A robbery was reported at 4:14 p.m. in the 1600 block of Ward Street.
A commercial burglary was reported at 7:30 p.m. in the 1800 block of Fifth Street.
A vehicle was reported stolen at 8 p.m. in the 2600 block of Regent Street.
Friday, July 19
Five burglaries or thefts from vehicles were reported: at 12:09 a.m. in the 2200 block of Ashby Avenue; at 10:30 a.m. in the 2500 block of 10th Street; at 1 p.m. in the 1800 block of Fourth Street; at 10:21 p.m. in the 2000 block of Bonar Street; and at 10:45 p.m. in the 3000 block of Mabel Street.
Three home burglaries were reported: at noon in the 900 block of Regal; at noon in the 2800 block of Claremont Boulevard; and at 1:45 p.m. in the 500 block of Sunset Lane.
Three vehicles were reported stolen: at 6 p.m. in the 1000 block of 63rd Street; at 10:30 p.m. in the 900 block of Dwight; and at 10:30 p.m. in the 1300 block of Russell Street.
Two robberies were reported, at 6:55 p.m. in the 1800 block of University Avenue, and at 9:29 p.m. at Martin Luther King Jr. Way and 63rd.
Someone reportedly brandished a weapon at 8:32 p.m. at San Pablo Avenue and Channing Way. According to a statement released by the Berkeley Police Department, police received a report of someone who was possibly brandishing a weapon near San Pablo and Channing. Officers were able to locate the involved parties, who said there had been a dispute, but that they “did not want further police services after the issue was resolved.”
Saturday, July 20
Four robberies were reported: at 12:40 a.m. in the 1200 block of San Pablo; at 2:20 a.m. at Channing and Fulton Street; at 2:50 a.m. at University and Shattuck avenues; and at 6:48 p.m. in the 2000 block of Oregon Street.
According to the University of California Police Department, the incident at 2:50 a.m. occurred when a man and woman, both 21, were walking near University and Shattuck when they were approached by four men. One tried to grab the woman’s purse, and another pulled out a gun and pointed it at her. The robbers were all described as black; one appeared 18-20 years old with a thin build. He was 5 feet 8 inches tall and clean shaven with a shaved head, and was wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt and dark jeans. The man with the gun also appeared 18-20 years old, 5 feet 10 inches tall with a thin build; he was clean shaven with short black hair, and wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt and dark jeans. No additional information was available about the other two men.
In the Channing and Fulton incident, according to UCPD, a 24-year-old man was walking when he was approached by a five men. One of the men, who was armed with a gun, demanded the victim’s property. They ordered the victim to lay on the ground, and then took his cell phone and wallet. The robbers fled the area on foot. Three of the men were described as black, 20-30 years old, with a think build. The two other men were described as Asian (no further description provided).
Two auto burglaries were reported, at 10:40 a.m. in the 3000 block of Telegraph, and at 6:25 p.m. in the 1300 block of 10th Street.
A home burglary was reported at noon at an unlisted location.
Two commercial burglaries were reported, at 5 p.m. in the 600 block of Page Street, and at 5 p.m. in the 3000 block of Telegraph.
A felony sexual assault was reported at 8:30 p.m. in the 2300 block of Piedmont Avenue.
Two vehicles were reported stolen, at 8:30 p.m. at an unlisted location, and at 9:30 p.m. in the 500 block of Parkside Drive.
According to a statement released by the Berkeley Police Department, at 9:40 p.m., officers contacted a driver during a vehicle stop. Police determined that the driver was impaired, and arrested the driver on suspicion of driving under the influence and for an outstanding warrant.
Sunday, July 21
Two home burglaries were reported, at 12:25 a.m. in the 2500 block of Dana Street, and at 4 p.m. in the 1500 block of Summit Road. Berkeley Police spokeswoman Officer Jennifer Coats said, via email, that police received a report of a suspicious person inside a home on Summit; police arrived and arrested Mark Clay, 21, on suspicion of burglary. He remains in custody with a bail of $50,000, and is scheduled for pre-trial hearing Aug. 1.
Two felony assaults or batteries were reported, at 4:55 a.m. in the 2100 block of Fourth, and at 5:11 p.m. in the 800 block of Bolivar Drive. According to the Berkeley Police Department, in the second incident, a 66-year-old Berkeley man called police after he was assaulted. Coats said, via email, that there was a dispute between him and another man: “During the argument things escalated with the suspect striking the victim with a heavy object, causing visible injury. The victim was treated at the scene.” Police arrested Jason Curtis Joyner, 38, on suspicion of assault and cruelty to an elder. Joyner remains in custody and is set for a pre-trial hearing July 31.
Police arrested an Oakland man on a burglary-related warrant during a traffic stop near Sacramento and Tyler streets at 5:11 a.m., said Coats, via email. Deante Goodman, 22, was a passenger in the vehicle during the stop, and police found him to have an outstanding warrant for his arrest. He remains in custody in Santa Rita Jail with a bail of $50,000. He is scheduled for a pre-trial hearing July 30.
Three thefts or burglaries from vehicles were reported, at 5:50 p.m. in the 1800 block of Shattuck; at 7:30 p.m. in the 1800 block of Marin Avenue; and at 11 p.m. in the 1400 block of Holly Street.
A vehicle was reported stolen at 8:30 p.m. in the 2000 block of Blake Street.
Monday, July 22
Six thefts or burglaries from vehicles were reported: at 2 a.m. in the 1000 block of 66th Street; at 5 p.m. in the 2800 block of Garber Street; at 5:30 p.m. at Delaware and Fourth streets; at 7 p.m. in the 1600 block of Harmon Street; at 8:30 p.m. in the 1800 block of Woolsey Street; and at 10 p.m. in the 400 block of Gilman Street.
Two robberies were reported, at 11:57 a.m. at Russell and King streets, and at 3:30 p.m. at Russell and Grant streets.
A home burglary was reported at 3:30 p.m. in the 1300 block of Shattuck.
A vehicle was reported stolen at 6 p.m. in the 400 block of Vincente Avenue.
A gun or weapon was reported at 7:40 p.m. in the 2700 block of Dohr Street. In response to a request from Berkeleyside, police said a 20-year-old Berkeley man was shot in the area, near Sacramento and Ward streets. Police responded to the area after a report of a single gunshot, but couldn’t find a victim. Later that night, however, a local hospital informed the department that a gunshot victim had come into the emergency room to seek treatment. Police spokeswoman Officer Jennifer Coats said the investigation is ongoing, but that police do not believe it was a random event. The shooter’s identity was described as “unknown,” and police did not release a physical description.
Tuesday, July 23
A robbery was reported at 2:15 a.m. at Channing and Bowditch Street.
Two home burglaries were reported, at 8 a.m. in the 2200 block of Ward Street, and at 2 p.m. in the 2700 block of Ellsworth Street.
Two auto burglaries were reported, at noon in the 800 block of Addison Street, and at 11 p.m. in the 2500 block of Hillegass Avenue.
Two vehicles were reported stolen, at 5 p.m. in the 2700 block of Dohr, and at 10 p.m. in the 1900 block of Hearst Avenue.
A felony assault or battery was reported at 7:53 p.m. in the 2500 block of Durant Avenue.
Wednesday, July 24
A vehicle was reported stolen at 2 a.m. in the 1700 block of Blake Street.
A commercial burglary was reported at 8:30 a.m. in the 2000 block of Allston Way.
Five thefts or burglaries from vehicles were reported: at 9:45 a.m. in the 1500 block of Shattuck; at 1 p.m. in the 1200 block of Fifth Street; at 3 p.m. in the 800 block of Bolivar; at 6 p.m. in the 2100 block of Derby Street; and at 8:20 p.m. in the 900 block of Northampton Avenue.
A home burglary was reported at 10 a.m. in the 2300 block of 10th.
A robbery was reported at 1:25 p.m. in the 3200 block of Adeline Street.
Someone reportedly brandished a weapon at 8:25 p.m. in the 2400 block of Shattuck.
A misdemeanor sexual assault was reported at 10:30 p.m. in the 2400 block of Piedmont.
