This was a tragic week in Berkeley, with one 22-year old man murdered as he ran through the streets on the west side of town, another, a professor at USF, dying in an early morning house fire on Oregon Street, the arrest of a San Leandro man for the August slaying of Dustin Bynum, and the death of a man whom Berkeley firefighters rescued from a Ward Street house fire on Aug. 28.
One of our most talked about stories was a profile of Anthony “Lil Tone” Medearis III, who was killed in the Sept. 8 shooting.
There was interesting news of course, like Berkeley’s decision to explore the construction of an innovative homeless housing complex, the projected December opening of the new West Branch library, and the huge turnout for the ever-popular Solano Stroll.
UC Berkeley’s new Chancellor, Nicholas Dirks, will be speaking at Uncharted: The Berkeley Festival of Ideas. So will Randall Grahm, Kate Kendell, Markos Moulitsas, Mollie Katzen, and many more. Uncharted is two days of provocative thinking, inspiring speakers, workshops, and a big party — all in downtown Berkeley in October. Read all about it, be part of it, and register on the Uncharted website.
