Berkeley Police are on the scene in the 1600 block of Milvia Street following a 911 call about a loud report at 12:34 p.m., authorities said.

“We have folks out there investigating now,” said Berkeley Police Lt. Andrew Rateaver shortly before 2 p.m.

Berkeley Police spokeswoman Officer Jennifer Coats said at about 2:05 p.m. that police are investigating the incident on Milvia as a possible suicide. She said there had been one confirmed fatality.

After the 911 call, Berkeley Police and Fire responded to an apartment building on Milvia, near Berkeley’s popular Gourmet Ghetto.

Readers reported numerous crime scene vehicles outside a school nearby; police said the vehicles were related to the investigation on Milvia.

Update, Oct. 1: The Berkeley Police Department confirmed Monday, Sept. 30, that this incident has been classified as a suicide.
