OHLONE MURAL CEREMONY The city of Berkeley is holding a rededication ceremony to celebrate the restoration of the Ohlone Mural. The mural, which depicts the creation story of the Ohlone people who once inhabited the Bay Area, was originally painted in 1995 by Jean LaMarr, a Native American artist. Local artist Miranda Bergman began restoring the mural a year and a half ago through the Public Art Mural Restoration program. Bergman used warm water washer and worked with special care to restore vibrant color to the mural’s 1,000-square-foot surface. The rededication ceremony takes place Saturday, Oct. 12, at 11:30 a.m. at the Ohlone Greenway Park on Hearst Street. The event will feature speakers, a blessing ceremony and a reception at Heyday Books on 1633 University Ave. afterwards.
LA PEÑA MURAL If the Ohlone Mural didn’t scratch your itch for wall paintings, swing by the La Peña Cultural Center at 3105 Shattuck Ave. on Sunday for the unveiling of the new Song of Unity mural. The unveiling event will include an arts and crafts fair outside the building starting at 4:00 p.m., an auction for salvaged pieces from the previous Song of Unity mural at 7:30 p.m., and a dance party in the cultural room at 9:00 p.m. There will be Latin American cuisine available for purchase throughout the event, with all profits going toward paying for the mural. According to the center’s website, the organization has spent nine months raising donations for the $5,000 needed to pay for the mural and only needs a little more to meet the goal.
SOLANO ART WALK Take advantage of the seemingly endless summer weather and join other Berkeley residents for the Fall Solano Art Walk. Spend a warm Saturday evening wandering down Solano Avenue, perusing open galleries like Albany Arts, Shoey Sindel Photography, Multiple Threads, and many more. Each gallery has something to offer: Nielsen Arts will be showcasing art as well as serving gumbo; learn about the region of Palouse, which is Idaho’s Tuscany; meet the mixed-media artist Daniel McLain at Kee-Ka Organics while you check out fashionable baby clothes. You can also check out art-related businesses like Sacred Rose Tattoo and Payn’s Stationery. Take a break from your browsing and enjoy musical performances by Piano Duet, DW and the Tribe with Nina C, the Nite Owl Trio, John McCord and the Chords, and Sam Weinstein. The walk is Saturday, Oct. 12, and runs from 5:30pm to 9:30pm.
SUNDAY STREETS It’s a good weekend for pedestrians in Berkeley: Sunday Streets is returning to Berkeley for its second year. For a full day, 17 blocks on Shattuck Avenue will be closed down and the community invited to treat the open road as a giant park for walking, running, biking, and skating. There will be dozens of free activities for people to do — everything from pumpkin decorating stands, giant puppeteering workshops, Filipino martial arts demonstrations, soccer games, musical performances, yoga, and so much more. SEXUAL ASSAULT AWARENESS This Saturday, Oct. 12, take a few hours to educate yourself about sexual assault at a seminar hosted at Trinity Church on 2320 Dana St. A local student worked with Cal’s Gender Equity Resource Center and Bay Area Women Against Rape to create a range of stimulating workshops. These will include lessons and discussion about stereotypes and myths surrounding rape; the types of behavior that contribute to “rape culture”; how to report sexual assault; and how to support survivors of sexual assault. The seminar takes place Saturday, Oct. 12, 12:30-3 p.m.
