STREETS ALIVE BENEFIT FOR PUBLIC ART The very first Annual Streets Alive! Benefit for Public Art takes place on Friday, Nov. 15, 4pm-8:30pm at the Firehouse Art Collective in the Lorin District. Enjoy live music by Ghost Town Jenny and Eyes on the Shore, art, food, drinks, a silent auction — and meet your local artists, community supporters and friends! The goal, in line with the mission of Streets Alive which is probably best known for turning our utility boxes into works of art, is to bring more art and nature into our community. STAND-UP COMEDY NIGHT Also on Friday, the David Brower Center in downtown Berkeley is hosting a stand-up comedy night — a special benefit for the Women’s Therapy Center. Bay Area comic Aundre the Wonderwoman (pictured right) will emcee. The line-up of comics includes: Marga Gomez, Irene Tu, Helen Hansel, Tynan Challenor, and Robby Sternin-Moser. WILLARD SCHOOL HARVEST FAIRE Start your holiday shopping at the Willard School Harvest Faire — and support the school’s gardening program. On Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., students and parents will be serving pizza made with vegetables from the Willard Garden. Willard-made edibles, such as apple butter, cranberry sauce and salsa verde, will also be for sale. Stuffing mix, felted soap made by students, and garden greeting cards will also be available. Enter at the Garden Gate on Telegraph Ave. between Stuart and Derby.
NANO-HIGH TALKS High school students are invited to come hear UC Berkeley Psychology Professor Alison Gopnick talk on why “Babies and toddlers are smarter than we are.” She is the inaugural speaker in the 2013-2014 Nano-High, a series of Saturday morning talks for high school students by internationally recognized leaders in the fields of science and engineering. The talks are sponsored by the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, in collaboration with UC Berkeley, the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health. Gopnick will be talking at 10 a.m. in room 2050 of the Valley Life Sciences Building at UC Berkeley. Advance registration is required.
STRAWBERRY CREEK CLEAN-UP Join the Friends of Five Creeks on Saturday to help clean-up the mouth of Strawberry Creek near the bay. Volunteers will help remove invasive plants and plant native varietals. Friends of Five Creeks will provide tools, gloves, snacks, and water. No RSVP is needed: just show up. From Sea Breeze Deli, just west of I-80 on the south side of University, walk west on the new pedestrian-bicycle trail; you’ll see the group. There is plenty of parking at Sea Breeze, AC Transit 51B stops across the street, and it’s an easy bike ride on the Bay Trail or the pedestrian-bicycle bridge over I-80.
