MLK Breakfast

It’s one of the highlights on the Berkeley calendar: the annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfast, and this year it takes place on Monday Jan. 20, 8-10 a.m., at Hs Lordships, on the Berkeley Marina.

The breakfast, which happens on MLK Jr. Day, is in its third year in Berkeley, and always brings together a diverse and friendly crowd to celebrate Dr. King’s legacy and to honor the next generation of young leaders. The food isn’t half bad either.

This year’s keynote speaker is the Rev. Leslie White who was one of the founders of the Berkeley breakfast

Rev. White, formerly of the St. Paul African Methodist Episcopal Church, and Berkeley police chief Michael Meehan happened to arrive in the city at about the same time a few years ago. Both agreed that there was a need for a specific event to celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

As White said last year: “We wanted a celebration of Dr. King that would be comprehensive, diverse, and touch on the whole community.”

More than 400 attended last year’s breakfast, and the organizers are expecting even more to join in this year.

The theme of this year’s event is “Beyond the Dream: Standing Together.”
