TIERRA MIA COFFEE This new coffee spot that we tipped you about in December is now open for business on the ground floor of the historic I. Magnin & Company building at the corner of Broadway and 20th Street, next to the Oakland 19th Street BART station. It’s the Californian coffee chain’s second Bay Area store — it opened on Mission Street in San Francisco last July. The founder is Ulysses Romero, a 1999 UC Berkeley alum. Tierra Mia Coffee (pictured above) roasts its own micro-lot coffee and signature drinks include the Mocha Mexicano, Horchata Latte, Coco Loco Latte, Cubano con Leche, Horchata Frappe and Mojito Mint Tea Lemonade.

BOWL’D BBQ Copan is no longer and in its place we have Bowl’d BBQ Korean Stone Grill, which opened this month at 4869 Telegraph Ave., between 48th and 49th streets. The menu focuses on grill-centric meat, fish and vegetable dishes and showcases at-the-table individual stone grills that allow customers to prepare some of their own food. Signature dishes ($7 to $24) on the small-plate focused menu are kimpbop (Korean sushi), and savory pancakes made with house made kimchi. A specialty of the house is Korean fried chicken, pork belly barbecue (five types), and customizable rice bowls called bibimbop “The Works.” Gluten-free and vegan options are available. The restaurant is run by the same two sisters who operate Bowl’d Korean Rice Bar in Albany and Spoon Korean Bistro in Berkeley. Daily service is continuous, running from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Tel: 510-654-2000.

TRUFFLE MAKING PRIZE The 28th KPFA Grateful Dead Marathon, hosted by David Gans, will start broadcasting on Saturday, Feb. 8, at 9 a.m. and end Sunday, Feb. 9, at 1 a.m. By far one of the most mouth-watering auction prizes is a private truffle-making session with Oakland’s Barlovento Chocolates (pictured). “Last year this prize was won by Jim LeBrecht of Berkeley Sound Artists,” said Gans, “and I got to spend the day with Jim and chocolatier Peter Brydon creating and manufacturing delicious treats!” The marathon features selections of unreleased and previously unheard music by the Grateful Dead, Jerry Garcia and related artists, an auction of Grateful Dead memorabilia, including fine-art photographic prints, and a live, in-studio performance by a special guest. KPFA is the nation’s first listener-sponsored, non-commercial radio station, founded by the Pacifica Foundation in 1949. Odd bagels

GLUTEN FREE BAGELS The wares of Odd Bagels (“Because everyone likes the odd bagel”), a local company that launched last year offering gluten-free bagels, are popping up in more and more places. You can buy the New York style bagels at Saul’s Deli in Berkeley, at Berkeley Bowl West, Farley’s in Oakland, and online service Good Eggs is also offering them as part of their repertoire. The bagels have received rave reviews from the East Bay Express and J-Weekly among others. Founder Brent Woodard, 43, launched Odd Bagels after he discovered he was gluten intolerant. For someone whose idea of perfection was starting his day with a bagel and cream cheese with a cup of coffee this was an issue. He found the gluten-free bagels on offer to be “severely lacking,” and set out to make something that people would feel “joyful” about eating.

ADESSO FOR BREAKFAST Adesso on Piedmont Avenue (sister restaurant to Dopo down the street) is slated to start a coffee and pastry service in the mornings on Tuesday, Feb. 4. The hours will be Monday to Saturday, 8-11:30 a.m. Adesso is 4395 Piedmont Ave. at the intersection of Pleasant Valley Road.
