Officers arrested one man but are still seeking another after a police chase near Ashby Avenue in Berkeley early Monday morning.

Officer Sean Wilkenfeld, spokesman for the California Highway Patrol’s Oakland division, said a CHP unit tried to stop a red Honda Civic without a license plate early Monday, but the driver fled the scene.

Authorities tried to make the stop shortly before 2 a.m. on eastbound Interstate 80 near the Ashby exit.

The fleeing driver exited the freeway and entered the city of Berkeley then “took multiple turns” to evade authorities, said Wilkenfeld via email.

Eventually the two people in the Honda fled on foot on Ward Street near Acton Street.

A foot pursuit began with help from city of Berkeley police officers.

Authorities were able to arrest the man identified as the driver of the Honda, 27-year-old Jose Morales of Oakland, nearby.

The passenger returned to the vehicle and was able to flee the area successfully.

Morales was booked into North County Jail on suspicion of felony evading, probation violations and driving on a suspended license.

Police ask anyone with information that could help identify the other man from the Civic to call the Oakland CHP office at 510-450-3821.
