A barricaded man who was making threats, brandishing a knife and hurling bottles at police shut down a block south of campus Monday night before ultimately being arrested by police after a short stand-off.

Monday at about 7:20 p.m., officers responded to a report of a burglary in progress in the 2200 block of Dwight Way, near Fulton Street, said Officer Jennifer Coats, Berkeley Police spokeswoman.

When they arrived, they saw a man walk out of the building, then rush back inside into a second-floor apartment.

He began to hurl items, including bottles, at police, breaking the windows to the apartment. Officers also saw him brandish what was described on the scanner as an 8-inch knife.

Police shut down all vehicle and foot traffic to the block as they tried to make contact with the man, who proceeded to make threats of violence toward officers in the area.

Coats said officers ultimately were able to speak with the man to deescalate the situation. They were able to talk him out of his apartment, where he was taken into custody at about 8 p.m.

Police took the man, who was identified only as a 25-year-old Berkeley resident, to a local hospital for assessment.

Coats said no officers were hurt during the incident, and that the case has been forwarded to the Alameda County district attorney’s office for prosecution.

The man’s name was not available Tuesday, as charges had not yet been filed.
