WAILIN’ ON WAYLON Bay Area “honky-tonk heroes” Misisipi Mike and the Midnight Gamblers and Otto Mobile and the Moaners will perform a birthday tribute to musician Waylon Jennings Saturday night at the Starry Plough. Doors open 8 p.m. for the 9 p.m. show which will feature blues-rock and honky-tonk offerings from the acclaimed musicians. Tickets are $6 online and priced on an $8-12 sliding scale at the door. CHILENOS Y AMIGOS Celebrate La Peña Cultural Center’s 39th anniversary by watching the Chilean national team play Australia at 3 p.m. today, Friday, in their first game in the World Cup. The game will be followed with a Chilean dinner at the center. The event is free with donations encouraged. All proceeds will benefit victims of the April fire in Valparaiso, Chile. BERKELEY JUNETEENTH FESTIVAL Juneteenth 2014, the 149th anniversary of the end of slavery in the United States, will be celebrated in Berkeley with live music, dance, spoken word and a range of other family-friendly activities. The festivities take place Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in Berkeley’s Alcatraz-Adeline corridor. The festival is hosted by the Berkeley Juneteenth Association, a non-profit founded in 1987, and will feature a two-on-two basketball tournament, historical exhibits and children’s art programs. There will be several road closures during the festival, and traffic will be affected in the area. Adeline Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Way between Alcatraz and Ashby will be closed. There will be no vehicle access to Adeline from side streets. Expect the roadways to be closed from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
IK ONKAR PEACE FOUNDATION OPEN MIC Ashkenaz Community Center will host an open mic Sunday for musicians and spoken word artists to benefit the Ik Onkar Peace Foundation. According to the Ashkenaz website it will be “a platform to share related to peace; interfaith and intercultural understanding; social, political, and environmental justice; honoring family and community in today’s society; and personal growth towards higher consciousness.” Artists can sign up on the Ashkenaz Open Mic Facebook page. CHARLES WOLLENBERG ON TOWN & GOWN On Saturday June 14, 2-3:30 pm, historian Charles Wollenberg will deliver the third part of his “Berkeley and the great State U: Episodes in Town & Gown History” talks at the central library in downtown Berkeley. In his first two self-contained talks, both of which were illuminating and entertaining, Wollenberg, author of the seminal Berkeley: A City in History, addressed the founding of Berkeley, as well as Phoebe Apperson Hearst’s influence on the city. The title of his talk on Saturday is “Mario Savio and the New Politics of Town & Gown, 1964-1988.” For details, visit the Berkeley Public Library online.
