Update, June 27, 1 a.m. The Berkeley Police Department has identified the victim from Thursday night’s shooting as a 38-year-old man, and classified his injuries as “serious.”
Police said, in a statement released shortly before 1 a.m., they believe the suspect from the shooting may have fled to the 1300 block of Ashby Avenue, about a block east of the attack, which took place at San Pablo Avenue and Ashby.
Officers “conducted an extensive search” but did not find the shooter, authorities said.
No further information was released.
Thursday night’s incident was the latest of several shootings, or attempted shootings, in Berkeley since March. Thursday morning, police carried out several raids and arrested one man they say is responsible for a shooting June 11 that sent two men to the hospital. A second man is still wanted by authorities in connection with that incident.
The violence began in March, when two teenagers were shot on Harmon Street in South Berkeley days after a drive-by shooting on the same block that caused only property damage. That same month, police responded to a drive-by shooting, with no reported victims, in West Berkeley on Bonar Street.
On June 7, two teenagers were shot at a West Berkeley hotel party on University Avenue. Police have reported no arrests in that incident.
Original post, June 26, 10:30 p.m. A shooting in the 3000 block of San Pablo Avenue shortly after 9:45 p.m. Thursday resulted in a victim being taken to the hospital, according to authorities.
Berkeley Police spokeswoman Officer Jennifer Coats said a call, about a man who had been shot, came in to the department at 9:54 p.m.
“The victim was transported to a local hospital by the Berkeley Fire Department. I do not know their condition,” she said via email at 10:26 p.m.
Berkeley residents reported hearing gunshots on Twitter. Several readers said they thought the sound might have been fireworks.
At 10:02 p.m. Charlotte Crul wrote that she had heard four gunshots, as well as the sound of a helicopter and sirens. Dan Loman said he also heard gunshots “in the Ashby area.”
A Berkeleyside Facebook follower said she also heard gunshots. She had just stepped out to take out the trash “and had really hoped that it was early fireworks.”
