This is a partial list of recent crime in Berkeley, compiled by Berkeleyside, and based on reports to the Berkeley Police Department unless otherwise noted. See recent Berkeley crime blotters here.
The following items represent just a sampling of calls, and times may be approximate. From July 17-23, there were 12 burglary reports, 29 auto break-in or theft from a vehicle reports, and 14 stolen vehicle reports to the Berkeley Police Department, according to CrimeMapping.com. Three robberies, 10 assaults, domestic violence incidents or batteries and two felony sexual assaults were reported. Significant incidents from the University of California Police Department included two burglaries and two vehicle thefts. These numbers are subject to change. Thursday, July 17
A robbery was reported at 4 a.m. at University Avenue and Bonar Street.
Someone reportedly brandished a weapon at 4:20 p.m. in the 1900 block of San Pablo Avenue.
A home burglary was reported at 5:33 p.m. in the 1800 block of Fifth Street. Police arrested 69-year-old Arie Deraadt in connection with this incident.
Two vehicles were reported stolen, at 7 p.m. in the 1000 block of Delaware Street, and at 10:30 p.m. in the 800 block of Grizzly Peak Boulevard. A vehicle also was stolen just before 2 p.m. in the Haas Pavilion, according to the University of California Police Department.
A reader asked us about a significant police presence at the North Berkeley BART station Thursday, July 17. BART Police Lt. Steve Coontz said that, at about 1:45 p.m., a woman who was found to have mental health issues was “creating a disturbance on the train and made verbal threats that there was a bomb on board.” Police detained her and took her to the hospital for psychiatric evaluation. Officers checked the Richmond-bound train and found no hazardous materials or weapons. (This was first reported in last week’s blotter.)
Friday, July 18
A vehicle was reported stolen at 8 a.m. at Eighth and Grayson streets.
Three home burglaries were reported: at 8 a.m. in the 1900 block of Parker Street; at 9:30 a.m. in the 2800 block of Wallace Street; and at 8:49 p.m. in the 2500 block of College Avenue.
A robbery was reported at 2:25 p.m. at Grant Street and Allston Way.
Via the BART Police Department: Two people reported the thefts of their bicycles from the North Berkeley BART station while the bikes were secured to racks with cable locks, between 2 p.m. and 9:50 p.m. The bicycles were described a red Public brand women’s 7-speed road bike, valued at $524 and a green Public brand men’s 7-speed road bike, valued at $450. An officer responded to complete the report.
Saturday, July 19
Two vehicles were reported stolen, at 1 a.m. in the 1300 block of Kains Avenue, and at 10 a.m. at Cedar and Spruce streets. The University of California Police Department also reported the theft of a vehicle at 1:11 p.m. on Centennial Drive.
A felony assault or battery was reported at 1:15 a.m. in the 2200 block of Haste Street.
A commercial burglary was reported at 4:37 p.m. in the 2000 block of University Avenue.
Sunday, July 20
Four vehicles were reported stolen: at 1 a.m. in the 3300 block of California Street; at 6 a.m. in the 1600 block of Parker Street; at 8 p.m. in the 1400 block of Sixth Street; and at 11 p.m. at Eastshore and Gilman.
Two home burglaries were reported, at 8:30 a.m. in the 2000 block of Allston Way, and at noon in the 2800 block of McGee Avenue.
A gun or other weapon was reported at 11:07 p.m. in the 1700 block of Seventh Street.
Monday, July 21
Three vehicles were reported stolen, at midnight in the 1500 block of Harmon Street; at 11 a.m. in the 2100 block of University Avenue; and at 9 p.m. in the 1400 block of California Street.
The University of California Police Department reported a burglary in Simon Hall just before 10 a.m.
A robbery was reported at 1:26 p.m. at Adeline and Woolsey streets.
A home burglary was reported at 1:30 p.m. in the 2000 block of Channing Way.
Two commercial burglaries were reported, at 3:38 p.m. in the 1000 block of University, and at 11:15 p.m. in the 2400 block of Stuart Street. Police arrested Laura Lim, 19, Hongxuam Li, 18, and Jingwei Tu, 19, in connection with the Stuart Street incident.
Police arrested 31-year-old Marcel Walls on suspicion of burglary, forgery, receiving unknown property and the unauthorized use of someone else’s identification information at 4:05 p.m. in the 2100 block of Shattuck Avenue.
Via the BART Police Department: A man reported the theft of a black Novara 2005 men’s 30-speed bicycle while it was U-locked at the North Berkeley BART station between 7:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. The victim valued the bicycle at $800.
Tuesday, July 22
Police arrested Jessie McAllister, 20, on suspicion of burglary in the 2500 block of Telegraph Avenue just before 11 a.m.
Police arrested Kenneth Ray Watkins, 19, on suspicion of burglary and the possession of burglary tools at 3:40 p.m. in the 1800 block of Harmon Street.
A home burglary was reported at 7 p.m. in the 2500 block of Stuart Street.
A felony sexual assault was reported at 11:30 p.m. at Berkeley Way and Grant Street.
Wednesday, July 23
The University of California Police Department reported at burglary in the Haas School of Business at 1:11 a.m.
A felony sexual assault was reported at 6:15 a.m. in the 2400 block of Ashby Avenue.
Two vehicles were reported stolen, at 7 a.m. in the 1700 block of Second Street, and at 8 p.m. at Eastshore Highway and Gilman Street.
A home burglary was reported at 10 a.m. in the 1800 block of 62nd Street.
Other recent incidents
On Sunday, July 27, shortly before 7 p.m., Berkeley police responded to a report of a battery in the 2500 block of Durant Avenue. The victims, both men, 25 and 41 years old, were walking into a restaurant when a male was walking out. That male punched the victims, one several times, said Berkeley Police spokeswoman Officer Jennifer Coats via email. One of the victims ran to a nearby restaurant, where the assailant followed him and continued to punch him. The assailant then punched another unknown victim, then fled the area. Both men were taken to a local hospital by the Berkeley Fire Department for treatment. The assailant was described as a white man, 5 feet 7 to 5 feet 8 inches tall, 150 pounds, wearing a dirty white baseball hat and light or white cargo shorts.
The University of California Police Department said there have been 14 auto burglaries — when something is taken from a vehicle — since July 1 on or near campus. The incidents took place in the Lower Hearst And Ellsworth parking structures, Coffer Dam, Foothill And Witter Field lots, the Lawrence Hall of Science Terrace Lot, RSF Garage and the Clark Kerr Campus. Most of the burglaries have been via window smash. A variety of items have been taken, including laptops, purses, iPads, cellphones, backpacks and more.
