This is a partial list of recent crime in Berkeley, compiled by Berkeleyside, and based on reports to the Berkeley Police Department unless otherwise noted.
The following items represent a sampling of calls, and times may be approximate. From July 31 to Aug. 6, there were reports to the Berkeley Police Department of 19 burglaries, 26 auto break-ins or thefts from vehicles and three stolen vehicles, according to CrimeMapping.com. Three robberies, 21 assaults, domestic violence incidents or batteries and one sexual assault were reported. Significant incidents from the University of California Police Department included one arson, one sex crime and a weapons call. The BART Police also reported a robbery at gunpoint at Ashby BART, which took place Friday, Aug. 8. These numbers are subject to change. Click the previous links for the most current information.

Thursday, July 31
The University of California Police Department reported an incident of arson at 12:10 a.m. on Upper Sproul Plaza.
Berkeley Police arrested 24-year-old Anthony Pirini at 10 a.m. on suspicion of burglary. He remains in custody and is scheduled for a pre-trial hearing Aug. 12. According to the sheriff’s department, Pirini was also arrested in Emeryville in January on suspicion of second-degree robbery, battery and theft.
A home burglary was reported at 8 p.m. in the 2600 block of Hillegass Avenue.
A vehicle was reported stolen at 8:30 p.m. at Whitaker and Sterling avenues.
Friday, Aug. 1
UCPD reported a sex crime at 1:51 p.m. at Rochdale Village, which is part of Cal’s co-op network, at 2424 Haste St.
Two home burglaries were reported, at 2:50 p.m. in the 500 block of Cragmont Avenue, and at 6:30 p.m. in the 2300 block of Telegraph Avenue.
A commercial burglary was reported at 5:36 p.m. in the 1800 block of Fourth Street.
A vehicle was reported stolen at 10 p.m. in the 1000 block of Euclid Avenue.
A robbery was reported at 11:42 p.m. in the 2200 block of Shattuck Avenue. Police arrested David Tecle of Berkeley. He remains in custody at Santa Rita Jail in Dublin and is set for a hearing in September.
Saturday, Aug. 2
Two home burglaries were reported, at 11:30 a.m. in the 2900 block of King Street, and at 2:53 p.m. in the 1500 block of Berkeley Way.
Two commercial burglaries were reported, at 2:19 p.m. in the 1700 block of Solano Avenue, and at 7:25 p.m. in the 1300 block of San Pablo Avenue.
Sunday, Aug. 3
A felony sexual assault was reported at 10:45 a.m. in the 1500 block of Prince Street.
A felony assault or battery was reported at 9:20 p.m. in the 3200 block of Sacramento Street.
Monday, Aug. 4
Five home burglaries were reported: at 8 a.m. in the 2700 block of Dohr Street; at 10 a.m. in the 1300 block of Carrison Street; at 11 a.m. at an unlisted location; at 3 p.m. in the 3100 block of Harper Street; and at 9:19 p.m. in the 3000 block of Acton Street.
Two robberies were reported, at 10:57 a.m. in the 1800 block of University Avenue, and at 4:40 p.m. at Colby Street and Ashby Avenue. Police arrested 50-year-old Reginald Johnson of Berkeley in connection with the Colby Street incident; he is no longer in custody.
The BART Police reported a bicycle theft at Ashby BART station just after 6 p.m. A man told police his $200 white and blue Sentra road bicycle had been stolen while it was cable locked at the bike racks in the free area between 6:45 a.m. at 5:45 p.m.
Tuesday, Aug. 5
Three commercial burglaries were reported: at 9:15 a.m. in the 1500 block of Shattuck Avenue; at 2:50 p.m. in the 2000 block of Oregon Street; and at 10 p.m. in the 2800 block of Telegraph Avenue. Police arrested 22-year-old Nikolas Kates in connection with the Oregon Street incident. He is no longer in custody.
UCPD reported a weapons call at People’s Park just after 6 p.m.
Two home burglaries were reported, at 8 p.m. in the 1100 block of Shattuck, and at 8:15 p.m. in the 2900 block of Newbury Street.
Wednesday, Aug. 6
Police stopped a vehicle in the 2400 block of Ashby just before 3:30 a.m. that had been reported stolen. Police arrested 33-year-old Adrian Smith on suspicion of driving under the influence, possession of a controlled substance and paraphernalia, vehicle theft, driving on a suspended license and hit-and-run causing property damage. Smith is no longer in custody.
A gun or other weapon was reported at 10 a.m. in the 1600 block of Sixth Street.
A home burglary was reported at 2:15 p.m. in the 2200 block of California Street.
Other recent incidents
A man reported he was robbed at gunpoint while at the taxi stand at Ashby BART on Aug. 8 at 12:16 p.m., according to the BART Police. The man was attempting to buy a laptop from two men for $600 when they demanded his money and took it at gunpoint. There were no reported injuries. The suspects fled toward Adeline Street and Ashby.
BART reported a bicycle theft at the North Berkeley BART station Aug. 7 at 6:27 p.m. The owner told police his gray 7-speed bike had been stolen while it was cable locked at the bike racks between 6:50 a.m. and 6:25 p.m.
BART reported a warrant arrest at the downtown Berkeley BART station Aug. 7 at 12:19 a.m. A record check on someone who was detained on suspicion of disturbing patrons near the ticket machines revealed an outstanding no-bail arrest warrant out of Alameda County for violation of community supervision. The subject was placed under arrest for the warrant.
A woman told Berkeleyside she was sexually assaulted on Martin Luther King Jr. Way on July 28 between Bancroft Way and Channing Way. She said a man, who was in his 20s, grabbed her in an inappropriate place. Police told the woman a similar report had been made a month prior in the same location: “I want people to know this is happening and to be on alert,” she told Berkeleyside. “I’m sure he has done this to others that haven’t reported it.”
