Three speakers
Three of the fascinating speakers who will be joining us at Uncharted: The Berkeley Festival of Ideas in Berkeley on Oct. 24-25. L to r: Saru Jayaraman, Joshua Bloom, and Tanya Holland

One of the thrills about putting together Uncharted: The Berkeley Festival of Ideas 2014 is that our speakers keep doing extraordinary things. It’s hard to keep up. We have Nobelists, Pulitzer winners, and Grammy recipients. And more and more is happening in the run-up to Uncharted on Oct. 24-25!

We just wrote on Berkeleyside about astronomer Josh Bloom‘s $110 earthquake early warning alarm. It’s more than a clever bit of tinkering – it could herald a new era of safety devices for all of our homes.

Tanya Holland has just published her Brown Sugar Kitchen cookbook, with a forward by Berkeley’s Michael Chabon who wrote that Holland and her Oakland restaurant are a way to “ponder the historical spirit of the city or skip straight to the fried chicken.”

And Saru Jayaraman‘s battle to raise restaurant workers’ wages is gaining traction, with profiles of the fight in The New Yorker and Saru giving this year’s Mario Savio Memorial Lecture next month, on the 50th Anniversary of the founding of the Free Speech Movement.

They’re just three of the incredible speaker line-up we’ve prepared for Uncharted. Come meet them and the many other wonderful thinkers who will be there.

We also want you to stay in touch with the news of Uncharted. Join our mailing list and we’ll draw one new subscriber to get lunch for two at Grégoire (Gourmet Ghetto or Piedmont Avenue) — which is where Josh Bloom sourced the box for his earthquake alarm!

With its goal of immersing you in stimulating conversations, lively debates, provocative thinking — as well as a great cocktail party at the beautiful University Club high atop Cal Memorial Stadium — Uncharted, the Bay Area’s first ideas festival, promises to be the event of the fall.

We look forward to seeing you at Uncharted on October 24 and 25.
