Two vehicle stops in Berkeley, near Gilman Street on Interstate 80, early Wednesday morning led to arrests and the seizure of weapons and drugs, authorities reported.
The Oakland CHP said “quite a bit of contraband” was recovered during the stops. Two men were arrested in separate incidents.
At 3:13 a.m., CHP officers stopped Jawas Saiban of San Leandro, who was driving a black Mercury Montego. The 18-year-old was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and the illegal possession of a firearm.
At 4:35 a.m., officers stopped Joseph Adrow of Richmond, in his blue Mitsubishi Montero, in connection with expired registration.
CHP spokesman Sean Wilkenfeld said officers found a firearm and five different types of illegal drugs in the 45-year-old felon’s possession. He was arrested on suspicion of being a felon in possession of a firearm and intent to sell illegal drugs, among other violations.
“Both of these stops took place within two hours of each other in the early morning hours and both stops helped take illegal guns off your streets,” the Oakland CHP wrote on its Facebook, where it announced the arrests Wednesday evening. “But no time to rest, the graveyard team is about to head out for another evening of patrol.”
Saiban is no longer in custody, but Adrow remains at Santa Rita Jail with a bail of $222,500. He is set for arraignment Friday at 2 p.m. at the Wiley W. Manuel Courthouse in downtown Oakland.
