A 48-year-old Richmond man died after a collision with a pick-up truck in Berkeley last week, authorities reported Thursday evening.

Friday, Sept. 12, Berkeley Police officers responded to an injury collision at Martin Luther King Jr. Way and University Avenue just after 8:30 p.m., said Officer Jennifer Coats, department spokeswoman, in a prepared statement.

The motorcyclist was identified as Gregory Allen Scoggin of Richmond.

The two collided as the motorcyclist rode west on University. The driver had been traveling east on University and was turning left onto Martin Luther King Jr. Way when the crash occurred.

When officers arrived to the accident scene, “several community members were already rendering aid to the motorcyclist.”

Berkeley Fire Department paramedics took Scoggin to a local hospital with serious injuries.

The driver of the pick-up truck, a 20-year-old Berkeley man, remained at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation. His name has not been released.

At this point, it does not appear that drugs or alcohol played a factor in the collision, said Coats.

Police were notified Tuesday by the Alameda County coroner’s office that the motorcyclist had died.

Coats said via email that police waited to release the information “to make sure his [Scoggin’s] family was properly notified as well as the other involved party.” (Berkeleyside requested information Monday about the crash.)

Traffic Bureau investigators are following up on the collision, so police are not releasing a primary collision factor at this time.

Berkeley Police ask anyone who may have witnessed the collision to contact the Traffic Bureau at 510-981-5980, or the non-emergency number at 510-981-5900.
